This is Tom, the man who built our house. He went off to WWI for America in 1917 as a young man, and this portrait was taken of him then, in his uniform. When he came back home he got married and decided to build his dream house, which for that time was something considered very modest by today's standards. He had to save his money and do a lot of it himself but finally he completed it in 1925. We really appreciate what he did and we try to take good care of this place. It is called an Arts And Crafts style house or a Craftsman's House.
He died in this very room where we have our computer, after a long and happy life. Two years ago we met a stranger who came to our door with this picture and wanted us to have it. She said that she found it in her parents' attic, that they had been friends with him, and that she felt compelled to give it to whoever lived in the house now.
I hope he's pleased with how we're taking care of his house. I'm sure he is as we've done lots of work to restore the house, and we collect antiques so we have great stuff from the 20's 30's and 40's all over.
Yes! I like to pretend he is watching over us. Possibly not thrilled with German stuff all over the place. "What??!! You mean there was another World War after the one I was in??!! Why do you have this German stuff; are you guys traitors or spies?! I almost died fighting these people and now my house is filled with German junk!"
